Meaning of the Name and Symbol
Snake — a universal symbol of wisdom, renewal, protection, and the lifelong search for understanding. From the ouroboros to ancient healing traditions, the snake represents life, learning, healing and the courage to grow.
Hill — a place of perspective, gathering, and ascent. Hills have long been natural meeting points where people come together to learn, reflect, and see more clearly.
Cross — an even‑armed cross symbolising the Earth and the four directions. It reflects navigation, balance, and the idea that wisdom comes from every culture and every path. Our discussions draw from many traditions.
Church — from two ancient Greek roots:
- ἐκκλησία (ekklesia)** — a gathering of people to discuss important matters
- κυριακόν (kyriakon)** — the root that later became kirk, kyrk, kirke, kirkko, kyrka, meaning “a place belonging to the community”
Together, these meanings reflect what Snake Hill Church truly is: a community gathering place for people of all backgrounds to learn, reflect, and grow together — not a denomination, not a doctrine, and not a snake‑handling group.
